A huge barrier to people getting ahead with their money is financial literacy – in other words the understanding of concepts, investments and strategies. By nature, people are less inclined to do something if they don’t understand it. When it comes to money this is especially true.
There is a massive amount of finance related content available freely (and not so freely) in the world today. If you google “Wealth Creation” there are about 262 million results. If you google “Money Tips” there are 3.8 billion results. It would take a lot of your spare time to wade through all that!
Generally, it’s best to narrow down the selection of information, especially for those new to planning their finances properly.
With this in mind, I like to introduce people to the Australian government’s financial literacy website – www.moneysmart.gov.au. It’s designed to help Australians take control of their money and build a better life with free tools, tips and guidance.
Broken into 5 key areas, Moneysmart provides information on:
- Banking and budgeting
- Loans, credit and debt
- Investing and planning
- Super and retirement
- Insurance
There are tips, videos, links, calculators and general information across each section. The content is easy to read and understand which is a huge plus for those new to the topics.
